What Is Family Dentistry?

Family dentistry refers to dental services provided to patients of all ages from infants to adults. A practice offering family dentistry allows the whole family to come to one place to receive dental care, from routine cleanings to restorative procedures.

Benefits of Family Dentistry

  • Convenient. Everyone in the family can come together for routine cleanings and exams rather than making separate appointments at separate offices.
  • Save time. You won’t spend as much time driving to appointments and waiting in waiting rooms when everyone can visit the dentist.
  • Save money. Less travel time means using less gas, putting fewer miles on your car, and taking less time off work, all of which can save you money.
  • Keep the same dentist for life. When children go to a pediatric dentist who only serves children, they eventually have to transition to an adult dentist. But with a family practice, they can receive dental care at the same office throughout their lifetime.

Many of our doctors were also former faculty of the aforementioned universities and continue teaching in their respective fields. As highly qualified doctors, we are able to provide an advanced level of care that can improve and maintain your dental health.

Procedures Offered

We provide the following services for children and adults:

  • Dental cleanings. Children and adults need to have their teeth professionally cleaned every six months to remove plaque that accumulates on the teeth over time.
  • Oral examinations. We also provide a thorough oral examination every six months to assess your dental and oral health. This also includes an oral cancer screening to look for any abnormalities that need to be addressed.
  • Fillings. We provide tooth-colored fillings to treat cavities and prevent them from worsening in both baby and permanent teeth.
  • Root canals. A tooth can become infected due to a crack or a deep cavity. A root canal procedure involves removing the infected tissue and filling the tooth with a rubbery filling resistant to infection. A root canal performed at the right time can often save a tooth.
  • Extractions. Teeth sometimes need to be extracted due to severe decay, damage, or for orthodontic purposes. We perform basic tooth extractions under local anesthesia.
  • Crowns. A tooth that has been severely damaged or decayed can sometimes be saved with a crown, a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth to protect it from further damage.
  • Dentures. When most teeth are too decayed or damaged to save, partial or complete dentures provide a replacement option.
  • Fixed Dentures.  Please see our implant page for more secure denture options that don’t move in your mouth.
  • Infant Frenectomy.  A thin flap of skin connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth and the lips to the gums. When these skin flaps are too tight, a baby is considered to be tongue-tied or lip-tied. Tongue tie often causes problems with breastfeeding and can prevent babies from gaining weight properly. Mom can suffer pain or exhaustion from inadequate feeding. A frenectomy is a procedure that loosens the skin so that the tongue and lips are free, allowing the baby to latch properly. We provide post-operative checkups after frenectomies to ensure that baby and mom are healthy and happy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do patients choose a family dentist?

A family dental practice is family-friendly, providing an environment suitable for children and adults. The family enjoys coming here together, especially young children.  It creates a good habit to see adults and siblings getting their teeth cleaned, and the young children will simulate the parents’ behaviors and develop good dental habits.

When should my child see a dentist for the first time?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental appointment around their first birthday or within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth.

One of the services provided in our office is also to help infants to latch better for breastfeeding. Infants born with tongue tie issues often have difficulty latching. Symptoms other than breastfeeding include more gas, poor sleep quality, and inadequate weight gain.

Can I go to a family dental practice if I don’t have children?

A dental practice offering family dentistry treats patients of all ages, regardless of whether or not there are children in the family. You can be our patient even if you don’t have children.

Is it worth getting dental work done on baby teeth?

Although baby teeth will eventually fall out, these first teeth remain in place for many years before they are naturally shed. Without dental care, baby teeth can develop cavities, become infected, fall out too soon, and lead to poor oral health. Healthy baby teeth pave the way for healthy permanent teeth. Baby teeth are important in the growth and development of young children. If they are lost early, it can cause crowded dentition, midline shift, crossbite, and many other issues that can affect adult teeth eruption and facial growth.

Why is a frenectomy necessary?

Babies can be born tongue-tied or lip-tied due to a genetic disposition. When the flap of skin that connects these tissues to their source is too tight, it can prevent proper latching during breastfeeding and potentially cause speech delays. Frenectomies help both babies and moms to thrive in the first few months.
